PHP Strings

A string is a sequence of characters that’s including letters, numerals, symbols, punctuation marks, etc.The strings can be written within single quotes (e.g. ‘Welcome to Netzole!’) and can also be written within double quotes (“Welcome to Netzole!”).

$string1 = ‘Hello World’;
$string2 = “Hello World”;

The character beginning with a backslash(“\”) are treated as escape sequences and are replaced with special characters. Here are few important escape sequences.

  • \n is replaced by the newline character
  • \r is replaced by the carriage-return character
  • \t is replaced by the tab character
  • \$ is replaced by the dollar sign itself ($)
  • \" is replaced by a single double-quote (")
  • \\ is replaced by a single backslash (\)

1. strlen() Function

The PHP strlen() function is used to return the length of a string.

Example

echo strlen("Good Morning!");
?>

Output:

2. strrev() Function

The PHP strrev() function is used to reverse a string.

Example

<?php
echo strrev("Good Morning!");
?>

Output:

!gninroM dooG


3. str_replace()Function

The PHP str_replace() function is used to replaces all occurrences of the search string with the replacement string.

Example

<?php
echo str_replace("Morning", "Dolly", "Good Morning!"); 
?>

Output:

Good Dolly!


4. strpos()Function

The PHP strpos() function is used to return the position of the first occurrence of a string inside another string.

Example

<?php
echo strpos("Hello Dolly!", "Dolly"); // outputs 6
?>

Output:

6


5. trim()Function

The PHP trim() function is used to removes white-space (or other characters) from the beginning and end of a string

Example

<?php
$str = "Hello Netzole!";  
echo "By using trim() function :".trim($str,"He!");  
?>

Output:

By using trim() function : llo Netzole!


6. str_word_count()Function

The PHP str_word_count() function is used to count the number of words in a string..

Example

<?php
$str = "Hello Netzole!";  
echo str_word_count($str);  
?>
